Instead, the name Marabou was selected, which was inspired by the marabou stork that had appeared in Freia’s emblem. Freia acquired all of Marabou’s shares in 1990. Norsk Hydro, Procordia, and Finnish Paulig sold a combined 55% of their shareholding in Freia Marabou to the Philip Morris firm Kraft General Foods on October 12, 1992. A few weeks later, Hershey Foods sold its shares (18.6%), transferring complete ownership of Freia to Philip Morris. The Ministry of Trade and Industry authorized Kraft General Foods Holding Norway Inc. to acquire all the stock of Freia Marabou AS on April 22, 1993. Kraft Foods Nordic paid NOK 3 billion to acquire Freia.
