PLASIEC Holds Successful Mock Election to Test New Voting Technology

In a proactive move to ensure the credibility of the October 9, 2024, local government elections, the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) conducted a mock election across the state’s three senatorial zones. The exercise was aimed at testing the newly introduced Voter Verification System (VVS), a technology designed to enhance the integrity of the electoral process by ensuring that only registered and eligible voters can participate in the election.

Polling units in six local government areas – Wase, Shendam, Pankshin, Mangu, Riyom, and Jos North – were selected for the mock election. PLASIEC followed the standard electoral procedure, deploying staff and materials to the designated polling units, setting up voter queues, and using the VVS to verify voter identities. This mock election allowed PLASIEC to assess its readiness ahead of the official election day.

The response from both voters and electoral officials was overwhelmingly positive. Voters expressed satisfaction with the smooth verification process enabled by the VVS, which minimized delays and ensured accuracy in voter identification. The mock election also gave PLASIEC officials valuable insights into potential challenges and areas for improvement before the actual election.

Speaking on the success of the exercise, PLASIEC Chairman, Hon Plangji Daniel Cishak highlighted the importance of the mock election in building public confidence. “We are committed to conducting a free, fair, and credible election. This mock election has allowed us to test our systems and ensure that everything is in place for a smooth electoral process,” he said.
