Governor Mutfwang Declares NYSC Management Conference Open, Urged Increased Investment In Agriculture To Boost Economy
Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang has called for more investment in agriculture as a means to create sustainable economic resources.
He said such a move would be aimed at eradicating poverty, promote food security, and revitalize the economy.
Governor Mutfwang said this during the opening of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) 2024 Annual Management Conference on Monday in Jos.
Represented by his deputy, Hon. Mrs. Josephine Piyo, he said the conference, tagged “51 Years of National Service: Enhancing the Role of NYSC in Achieving Food Security,” would help to address the various challenges Nigeria faces in the area of food security.
The Governor pointed out that the NYSC, originally established as an interventionist organization to promote national unity and integration following the nation’s 30-month civil war, has evolved into a strategic player in our national development efforts.
He emphasized the significance of the conference theme, stating that it is both appropriate and timely given the current economic hurdles the nation is grappling with.
“In these trying times, we must rely on agriculture, which remains our most viable resource for combating poverty, ensuring food security, and fostering economic recovery,” he noted.
The Governor urged stakeholders at all levels—national, state, and local—to collaborate with the NYSC in striving toward the Nigeria of our aspirations, particularly by setting up skill acquisition centers for Corps Members.
Earlier, Brig. Gen. Y.D. Ahmed, Director General of the NYSC, remarked that choosing Plateau State as the venue for the 2024 Annual Conference is a testament to the support the scheme receives from the state government and its citizens.
He added that the NYSC is committed to aligning with the Federal Government’s policies aimed at achieving food security.
The Director General affirmed that the scheme will continue to make a positive impact on the socio-economic development of the country while also promoting national unity and addressing critical areas such as education, agriculture, health, community development, and youth empowerment.
